Course Description
Master of Philosophy in Education (Curriculum and Instruction)
EDUC7050 Current Issues in Education
This course provides students with insights into the nature of education as a profession and the links between theoretical developments and educational practice. It covers key ideas and contemporary research in foundational themes in education, including educational psychology, early childhood education and child development, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, physical education and sport studies, educational administration, and related fields. Students will have the opportunity to interact with leading experts across subfields of education, and demonstrate an awareness of current issues in these areas. Through thorough and conscientious participation, students will be able to articulate trends in current issues in education, identify the significance of educational research, engage in debate for controversial issues in an empirically grounded and theoretically sophisticated manner, and express informed opinions in writing.

EDUC7051 Qualitative Methods, Data Management, and Analysis in Educational Research
This course is designed to provide students with comprehensive training in qualitative research methods as applied to educational contexts. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on activities, students will develop practical skills in research design, data management, and analytic techniques specific to qualitative research in education. Emphasis will be placed on the use of specialized software for data management and analysis.

EDUC7190 Thesis
This course provides an opportunity for students to do research work in relevant fields with the aim of strengthening their abilities of conducting empirical research under supervision. Academic norms should be abided by and creative scholarship and originally are required.
EDUC7101 Foundations of Curriculum and Instruction
This course aims to provide an overview on the principles and theories of curriculum and instruction. The introduction of these theories and principles offers students a broad perspective on fundamental curriculum questions, encompassing the purposes, content, design, and structure of educational programmes, as well as the theories of learning and teaching and the relationship between the two.

EDUC7102 Curriculum Design and Implementation
This course involves the examination of pertinent literature to delve into various aspects of curriculum, including its significance, characteristics, and foundations. It also encompasses the process of curriculum design, covering models, goals, content, and organization, as well as curriculum implementation and instruction, along with considerations for curriculum reform and evaluation. The aim is for students to attain proficiency in fundamental concepts of curriculum design, implementation, and reform, and apply this knowledge to create an actual curriculum.

EDUC7103 Evaluation of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Performance
This course aims to empower students with knowledge, strategies and techniques essential for evaluating curricula, instruction, and student performance. It involves a critical analysis of the assumptions, strengths, and weaknesses associated with various types of evaluation. Students will engage with evaluation scenarios specific to particular curricula, instructional methods, and student populations. Students will develop assessment tools tailored to a particular teaching context with special emphasis on authentic assessment, performance assessment, portfolio assessment, and self/peer assessment.

EDUC7151 Seminar in Subject-based Curricular Issues
This seminar course is designed to explore current issues and challenges related to subject-based curriculum development and implementation. Students will analyze and evaluate various curriculum models and approaches and consider the ways in which they align with educational goals and standards. The course will focus on specific subject areas (i.e., mathematics, science, English language, Chinese language, educational technology, social studies, physical education, music, and art), and will explore the ways in which these subjects are taught and assessed in schools. Through readings, discussions, and research, students will develop an understanding of the curriculum development process and the role of subject-based curriculum in shaping educational experiences for students. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to examine and analyze the curriculum materials and instruction in the subject area of their choosing.
