Course Description
Master of Philosophy in Education (Early Childhood Education)
EDUC7050 Current Issues in Education
This course provides students with insights into the nature of education as a profession and the links between theoretical developments and educational practice. It covers key ideas and contemporary research in foundational themes in education, including educational psychology, early childhood education and child development, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, physical education and sport studies, educational administration, and related fields. Students will have the opportunity to interact with leading experts across subfields of education, and demonstrate an awareness of current issues in these areas. Through thorough and conscientious participation, students will be able to articulate trends in current issues in education, identify the significance of educational research, engage in debate for controversial issues in an empirically grounded and theoretically sophisticated manner, and express informed opinions in writing.

EDUC7051 Qualitative Methods, Data Management, and Analysis in Educational Research
This course is designed to provide students with comprehensive training in qualitative research methods as applied to educational contexts. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on activities, students will develop practical skills in research design, data management, and analytic techniques specific to qualitative research in education. Emphasis will be placed on the use of specialized software for data management and analysis.

EDUC7052 Quantitative Methods, Data Management, and Analysis in Educational Research
This course is designed to provide students with comprehensive training in quantitative research methods as applied to educational contexts. EDUC7190 Thesis
This course provides an opportunity for students to do research work in relevant fields with the aim of strengthening their abilities of conducting empirical research under supervision. Academic norms should be abided by and creative scholarship and originally are required.
EDUC7302 Cognition and Learning in the Early Years
This course will provide students with an in-depth understanding of children’s cognitive development and its implications for learning. It will encompass various topics including brain development, perception, memory, language, concept learning, problem solving, and social cognition. Additionally, the course will explore the roles of genetic and environmental factors in shaping children’s brain and cognitive development and origins of learning disorders.

EDUC7303 Child Play Studies
The benefits of play have been associated with improvements in areas such as exploration, creativity, parent-child bonds, and healthy child development. This course encompasses a range of international perspectives on play, including the diverse interpretations, the philosophical rationales underpinning play, and the various play practices. Specifically, it will explore contemporary approaches and research methods for understanding children’s play, debates surrounding play as curriculum and/or approach, issues pertaining to play advocacy and policy-making, as well as the potential for promoting culturally-appropriate play practices worldwide.

EDUC7304 Early Childhood Program Quality Evaluation
This course delves into the theories, techniques, trends, and issues central to evaluating programme quality in early childhood education and care (ECEC). Students will develop a profound understanding of what constitutes a high-quality ECEC programme and its far-reaching implications for children’s development and learning. The course will also spotlight the assessment of instruments and methods employed in ECEC programme quality rating and improvement systems. Moreover, students will actively engage in the practice of (1) conducting quality assessments of local ECEC programmes, (2) reporting evaluation results, and (3) providing constructive feedback to classroom teachers for continuous quality enhancement.

EDUC7354 Child and Family Education
This course is designed to help students develop an understanding of key theories and principles related to family education and to link such knowledge to practical issues when dealing with different types of families as an early childhood educator. Students will delve into topics such as effective parenting strategies, how parent-child relationship, and marital relationship influence child development as a dynamic family system and the communication strategies with families. Additionally, the course will address the role of ethical conduct in fostering stronger familial connections. Students will also learn to leverage community-based resources effectively to establish and enhance the school-family-community partnership.
