Since early 1990s, STEM education has evolved into an international reform movement. Many countries are advancing STEM education as a national priority. The basic premise of STEM education is to increase national competitiveness in science, technology, economic development, and national security through cultivating STEM literacy in K-12 students, increasing access, inclusion and equity in STEM education, and producing a robust STEM workforce
Research on STEM education has been increasing rapidly. Among many important research topics on STEM education is STEM literacy. Although disciplinary STEM literacies, including science literacy, math literacy, technological literacy and engineering literacy, are well-defined, there is currently no commonly-agreed upon definition and framework of STEM literacy. The purpose of this international symposium is to provide a forum for STEM education researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas on STEM literacy. Invited scholars on STEM literacy will give presentations; conference participants will present their research and practices on cultivating K-12 students STEM literacy. At the end of the conference, participants will develop a shared knowledge of STEM literacy to inform future STEM education research and practice.
