The Faculty of Education (FED) was founded in 1989 with the objective of providing a comprehensive, positive and innovative research environment to cultivate high calibres in education and research in Macao, the Greater China Region and globally.
FED has marked significant growth and success in recent years through its leading teacher education programmes and educational research centres. It is ranked 126-150 in THE World University Rankings 2025 by subject (education), UM is ranked #15 in the Best Global Universities for Education and Education Research by 2025/2026 “U.S. News & World Report”, and FED’s teacher education programmes are recognized as one of the top ten in the Greater China Region. We cultivate pre K-12 school teachers with diverse specializations, including English, Chinese, mathematics, STEM, integrated science, pre-primary education, primary education, secondary education and music education.
In addition to these areas, FED offers Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. programmes in a wide range of educational disciplines, such as curriculum and instruction, science education, educational technology, educational administration, early childhood education, educational psychology, physical education and sport studies, school counseling, AI and education, TESOL and data science. Our faculty and students share a deep commitment to education quality and equity, underpinned by strong expertise in learning and development. We prepare graduate students with critical thinking and organizational skills to translate visionary ideas into practical success, and to contribute to the public good in Macao, the Greater Bay Area and the Country. We develop research expertise in doctoral students by a firm grasp of research knowledge and skills, and generating relevant research that improves our understanding, policies and practices in education.
FED distinguishes itself through the diverse backgrounds of its academic staff in terms of their educational training and experience. Our staff are from a variety of different countries and regions. Approximately half of our faculty members received their doctoral degrees from prestigious universities in Australia, Europe, and North America, while the other half completed their studies in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan region and Singapore. This blend of expertise enables perfect integration and complementarity between Eastern and Western educational philosophies with the faculty.
