*Completion of this programme does not guarantee that graduates will automatically obtain teacher’s qualifications in Macao. Non-local graduates may be able to acquire the necessary qualifications by complying with the relevant local regulations.
The Master of Arts (MA) in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Programme (TESOL) programme seeks to promote the effectiveness of English language teaching through providing advanced training in English teaching. In addition to the enhancement of theoretical and practical knowledge in second/foreign language teaching and learning, the programme also aims at refining students’ teaching skills, developing their abilities to reflect on their own practice and fostering their cultural awareness essential for them to thrive personally and professionally in the increasingly culturally diverse society of Macao and the world at large. It is also designed to educate students as independent and innovative classroom-based researchers in the field of second and foreign language education. Graduates of the programme are expected to have attained advanced knowledge in second language teaching and learning and professional expertise in teaching and research. It is designed for English language teachers, teacher educators and language professionals working in areas of English language teaching, curriculum design and planning, materials development and assessment in Macao, Mainland China or overseas.
1. | Demonstrate a critical awareness of theories of TESOL teacher learning while contextualising, planning and describing objectives for teacher development in English as a Second Language (ESL)/English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. |
2. | Analyze and synthesize the teaching and learning contexts according to the knowledge acquired on English language learning and teaching. |
3. | Apply theories of second and foreign language education to practical problems in English language learning and teaching. |
4. | Evaluate language curricula, implement summative and formative assessments, and develop and adapt teaching resources and materials. |
5. | Apply innovative instructional and assessment approaches and strategies in English language classrooms. |
Master’s Degree & Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma Programmes – UM GRS
Applicants must follow the general admission rules and requirements of the University.
Applicants applying for the programme must hold a bachelor’s Degree in English education or English-related field.
Local applicants must have teacher qualification.
- Applicants who received their Bachelor’s degree from a university where the medium of instruction was not English are required to provide one of the following as proof of English proficiency.
- Obtained a Level 6 of the College English Test (CET) score of 430 or;
- Obtained a TOEFL* score of 550 (paper-based examination)/ 80 (Internet-based examination) or;
- An IELTS* overall score of 6.0 or above with no sub-score lower than 5.5 or;
- Passed the Level 4 or Level 8 of the Test for English Majors (TEM).
* TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date.
Note: The University will inform applicants of the above application conditions and information at the time of admission.
The duration for the MA in TESOL Programme is two years. During this period, the student needs to take seven compulsory courses and one required elective course. Students also have to complete a project report. Then he/she will be awarded the degree of Master of Arts after completing the programme of study.
